This late 19th century Native American History photo features Apache Chief James A. Garfield, leader of the Jicarilla Apache Nation. He took the name Chief James Garfield after receiving a peace medal from President Garfield, and later adopted the surname Velarde, his wife being Josephit Aoston Velarde, and their residence being on an allotment near La Jara Lake, Greenwald.
