Description
This late 19th century US Transportation History photo features the Black Diamond Express, which operated as the flagship passenger train of the Lehigh Valley Railroad that connected Jersey City with Buffalo. Although the train facilitated the transportation of freight and passengers alike, it was christened ‘Black Diamond’ because its major cargo was the exceptionally hard and highly valued anthracite coal.
