Description
This early 20th century US Social History photo by Lewis Hine features the Breaker Boys who were employed at the Ewen Breaker located in South Pittston, Pennsylvania Coal Company. Breaker boys were employed in the labor-intensive coal-breaking facilities, were mostly 8-12 years old and spent 10 hours a day and six days a week sitting on a wooden stool and removing slate and other impurities from coal.
