Description
This mid 19th century US History photo features the Civil War Unknowns Monument, a burial vault and memorial for honoring the unidentified dead from the American Civil War. Located in the grounds of Arlington House in Virginia, the original monument underwent a radical change in 1893, when the plain sarcophagus walls were replaced with more ornate boundaries and the lid was replaced by a replica of the Ark of the Covenant which is described in the Book of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible.
