This late 19th century US Presidential History photo features Theodore Roosevelt, before taking over as the 26th US President, when he resigned from the post of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy to set up the first volunteer cavalry unit in the Spanish-American War, known as the Rough Riders. Under the leadership of Colonel Roosevelt, the Rough Riders became the most famous of all the units fighting in Cuba after the victory at Kettle Hill, San Juan Heights, and the capture of the city of Santiago de Cuba. Photo taken on October 26, 1898.
