This late 19th century US Presidential History photo features Colonel Theodore Roosevelt posing in Rough Rider uniform, after having taken over the command from his predecessor, Colonel Leonard Wood. ‘Rough Riders’ was the nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of the three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one which saw combat. Photo taken on October 26, 1898.
