This early 19th century US Naval History painting by Gilbert Stuart features Commodore Thomas Macdonough, an early 19th-century naval officer who played a role in the War of 1812. As the sixth child in a family of ten siblings, he entered the naval life at an early age and after having become a midshipman at the age of sixteen, he served with Stephen Decatur at Tripoli and was a member of "Preble's Boys", a select group of U.S. naval officers serving under the command of Commodore Preble.
