Description
This late 19th century US History photo features the Main Reading Room of the newly built Library of Congress, wherein eight giant marble columns support 10-foot-high female plaster figures representing civilized life and thought, namely Religion, Commerce, History, Art, Philosophy, Poetry, Law and Science. The 16 bronze statues that grace the balustrades pay homage to men whose lives symbolized the thought and activity as represented by the statues.
