Description
This mid 20th century US History print features the Biddle Staircase at Goat Island that was built in September and October of 1829 and was located near the sight of the Cave of the Winds elevator. The staircase was financed by Nicholas Biddle, a famous Philadelphia banker and friend of Peter Porter, one of the Porter Brothers who owned the Goat Island by the Niagara Falls on the American side, because Biddle noticed that there was no safe way to descend from the west side of Goat Island into the Niagara gorge. Original by Michael Seymour, 1846.
