This mid 19th century US Literary History painting by Joseph O. Eaton features Herman Melville’s portrait, which was commissioned and presented to the family by Melville's brother-in-law, John Hoadley, and currently hangs in the Edison and Newman Room in the Houghton Library, Harvard University. As an American novelist, he is best known for his accurate comprehensive novels pertaining to the sea, the most noteworthy being Moby Dick.
