Description
This late 19th century portrait features King David Kalakaua, nicknamed the Merrie Monarch, who after having succeeded Lunalilo, was the last King of Hawaii. As the last-but-one monarch, he is credited with having written the “Hawai'i Pono'ī,” the anthem of the Kingdom of Hawai'i which is now the Hawai'i State song, and is also responsible for the construction of 'Iolani Palace in Honolulu, which still stands as a symbol of Hawaii's independence during his reign.
