Description
This late 19th century US History photo features Louisa May Alcott, an American writer who authored the renowned novel ‘Little Women’ and also worked as a nurse during the American Civil War. From a tender age, Alcott read books in Emerson’s library, learned about botany at Walden Pond with Thoreau, wrote a poem titled "Thoreau’s Flute", socialized with Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist, and Julia Ward Howe, who was a women’s suffrage activist.
