Description
This mid 20th century US History photo features Marian Anderson, an American Contralto, facing the Washington Monument, as she sings to an audience seated in front of Lincoln Memorial, at a memorial service for Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes. Not only was she the first African-American to sing in an opera at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, but she also sang as part of the ‘March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom’ in which Martin Luther King delivered his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. Photo taken on April 20, 1952.
