This late 19th century painting titled ‘Posthumous Portrait of Dred Scott’ by Louis Schultze features Dred Scott, plaintiff in the infamous 1857 Dred Scott v. Sandford case that was presented at the US Supreme Court. An enslaved African-American man in the US, Dred Scott unsuccessfully sued for his freedom and that of his wife, Harriet, and their two daughters in the case which became popular as the "Dred Scott decision".
