This mid 19th century US Political History photo features Schuyler Colfax, an American journalist and politician who served as the 17th US vice president, and as the 25th speaker of the House of Representatives. He was well-known for his opposition to slavery while serving in US Congress, founded the Republican Party, and during his first term as speaker led the campaign to pass the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery.
