Description
This mid 19th century US Military History photo features Sergeant John Lincoln Clem, a young soldier in uniform who served in Co. C, 22nd Michigan Infantry Regiment from May 1, 1863 till September 19, 1864. Legend has it that he ran away from his home in Ohio when he was 9 years old to follow the Union troops, served as the Union Army drummer boy, and was the youngest boy to fight in the American Civil War.
