Description
This late 19th century British History photo features Shakespeare's Memorial Theatre, which was located at Stratford-on-Avon, in West Midlands, on the banks of River Avon about two decades before it burned down in 1926. Built to mark the birthplace of William Shakespeare, the theater had all the marks of Victorian conventionality, and since its opening, it serves as a venue for commemorating Shakespeare’s birthday, April 23, when the most renowned Shakespeare actors and actresses appear in plays, particularly Sir Frank Benson and his company.
