This mid 19th century US Military History print features Union and Confederate soldiers engaged in combat during the attack of the Massachusetts 54th Infantry Regiment on Fort Wagner, Morris Island, South Carolina, near Charleston and the subsequent death of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. As the second all-Black Union regiment to fight in the American Civil War, the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Infantry was a volunteer Union regiment that saw extensive service in the Union Army. The print reads, “The gallant charge of the fifty fourth Massachusetts (colored) regiment: on the rebel works at Fort Wagner, Morris Island, near Charleston, July 18th 1863, and death of Colonel Robt. G. Shaw.”
