Description
This mid 19th century US Firefighting History print features the aftermath of the disastrous fire at the William T. Jennings & Co clothing store which was located at 231 Broadway, New York City, wherein twenty firemen were injured and eleven lost their lives on April 25, 1854. The firemen are depicted as they “take up” their gear after containing the great blaze, which is now being controlled by a single hoseman. The engines are manual pumpers as firefighters were slow to transit to steam engines.
