Description
This mid 18th century British Religious History artwork titled ‘The Martyrdom of St. Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury’ by Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre features Thomas Becket, also called Thomas à Becket or Thomas of London who served as the chancellor of England and archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of King Henry II. Killed by a group of four knights at the behest of King Henry II at the altar of Canterbury Cathedral, Becket was officially declared a saint within three years of his death, and was heralded as a hero who had valiantly defended the Church by defying a tyrant.
