Description
This late 19th century US History print features The National Washington Monument, the tallest stone obelisk in the world made from marble, granite and gneiss that was built to commemorate George Washington. Work on the monument commenced in 1848, but remained halted between 1854 and 1877 owing to lack of funds for a number of reasons, one of them being the American Civil War. The structure was eventually completed in 1884 and it’s memorial stones were placed in 1888.
