Description
This late 19th century US Military History print features USS Essex, a 1000-ton ironclad river gunboat that had been purchased by the US Army in September, 1861, to fortify its Western Gunboat Flotilla. On August 5, 1862, she joined Rear Admiral Farragut’s squadron as the sole ironclad vessel in lower flanks of the Mississippi River, and played a pivotal role in repelling the attack of enemy forces on Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
