Description
This early 20th century US History photo features one of the girl workers of the Cheney Silk Mills, South Manchester, Connecticut, amidst what were regarded as being favorable working conditions at the time. During the early 1920s’, the Cheney Mills prospered thanks to a 4700-strong workforce, but began to decline after 1923 due to a combination of factors, like the Great Depression, new fashion trends, removal of protective import tariffs and introduction of synthetics as a clothing option.
