I was a corporal in the USMC working at Leatherneck Magazine (1968-1970) in the Art Dept. at the same time that the photographer who took this photograph was head of the Photography Dept. Lou Lowery told me the story of how he came to take this photograph when he accompanied the first rifle squad of Marines to the summit of Suribachi. I have always thought, since hearing his story, and especially after reading "Flags of Our Fathers", that Sgt. Lowery never received the proper acknowledgement for his contribution to the history of the Marines or the history of photography.
