This early 20th century Russian print titled ‘1o Kestnermappe Proun [Proun. 1st Kestner Portfolio]’ by El Lissitzky features allegorical geometric shapes that capture the Bolshevik ideology of progress, and reject the established artistic traditions. Born in Russia, the artist El Lissitsky studied engineering and architecture in Germany, and worked alongside Marc Chagall and the suprematist artist Kasimir Malevich, who taught him how to use pure geometrical shapes, dynamic squares and rectangles in art.
