Description
This early 20th century British Military History photo features a corporal checking shells in St. Eloi, a small village in the Flemish province of West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, which played a crucial role in the First World War when it was a part of the western front. During the Battle of Messines in 1917, most of the mines laid out by the British were detonated and enabled the British 41st Division to successfully defeat the German forces. Photo taken on August 11, 1917.
