This early 19th century Scientific History painting by Samuel Finley Breese Morse features Eli Whitney, an inventor who earned renown for having invented the cotton gin, or the cotton engine. Courtesy of this invention in the era of the Industrial Revolution, cotton that was grown in Antebellum South became a profitable crop and had a huge impact on the overall economy of this region.
