This late 19th century US History artwork titled ‘The great Mississippi steamboat race: from New Orleans to St. Louis, July 1870’ features the most celebrated American boat race on the Mississippi River from New Orleans to St. Louis, a distance of 1210 miles. The participants, Robert E. Lee and Natchez, left the docks of New Orleans on June 30, 1870, with fiery smoke billowing from their smokestacks to prove their speed on the Mississippi River. Ultimately, Robert E. Lee won the race by arriving at St. Louis within three days, eighteen hours and thirty minutes.
