Description
This early 20th century nature photo features three hikers looking at Grasshopper Glacier, which was given its name because there are millions of extinct grasshoppers embedded within it, with the Beartooth mountain range forming the background. These grasshoppers are an extinct Rocky Mountain grasshopper species named Melanoplus spretus. They perished here, were buried by new snow and preserved. Photo taken on December 26, 1916.
