Description
This late 19th century nature photo features an eruption of Mount Vesuvius as it is spewing a tall column of smoke and ash above the volcanic crater. Regarded as being one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world owing to its proximity to the city of Naples and the surrounding towns on the neighboring slopes, Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano and its activity ranges from Hawaiian-style emission of very liquid lava, lava fountains, lava lakes and lava flows, to Strombolian and Vulcanian eruptions.
