Description
This mid 19th century US History artwork titled ‘View of the New York quarantine, Staten Island’ by artist W.J. Bennett features ships and boats offshore of the New York quarantine station at Staten Island. Swinburne, which lies off the South Beach of Staten Island, New York City, was used during the first half of the 20th century as a quarantine facility for immigrants who, on their arrival in the US, were found to be suffering from contagious diseases. Immigrants suspected of having contagious diseases were taken to the quarantine hospital and were prohibited from going to Ellis Island for entry till they were declared cured of the disease.
