Description
This mid 19th century US Political History photo features a half-length portrait of Preston Brooks, a member of the South Carolina State House Representatives and that of the 33rd US Congress. He supported slavery like his fellow South Carolina legislators, and is most well-known for having beaten up Senator Charles Sumner with a cane for having delivered a speech against slavery.
