Description
This early 20th century US Maritime History artwork titled ‘Captain Kidd in New York Harbor’ by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris features a 17th century pirate named William Kidd, who became a member of a French–English pirate crew and sailed the Caribbean under Captain Jean Fantin. He and the other crew members mutinied and ousted the captain and sailed to the British colony of Nevis. Popularly known as Captain Kidd, on returning from an Indian Ocean voyage, he was tried and executed for piracy wherein modern historians like Sir Cornelius Neale Dalton have deemed his incarceration unjust.
