Description
This late 19th century French Architecture History photo features Cathedral and Notre Dame de Fourvière, Lyons, France, a minor basilica in Lyon which was built with private funds between 1872 and 1884. Fourvière is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom is attributed the salvation of Lyon from the bubonic plague that swept Europe in 1643, which is why each year on December 8, Lyon thanks the Virgin by lighting candles throughout the city, in what is called the Fête des Lumières or the Festival of Lights.
